I'm thrilled that SSDs are finally competitively priced with HDDs. With continued improvements to the technology, they are just as stable if not more so.
The recent V-NAND technology of the 860 EVO has allowed manufacturers like Samsung to fit even more memory in to smaller form factors at a more affordable price.
Lower power usage, almost no heat, immediate startup and blazing performance (6Gb/s) in such a compact drive with no moving parts are all very enticing reasons to upgrade to the latest SSD models.
I'm very impressed with the 860 EVO. The 500GB unit is competitively priced. Using an external adapter connecting via USB 3,
I formatted it to work with OSX on wife's MacBook Air.
It did so without a hitch and I was transferring large files at amazing speeds in no time.
I'm not certain yet if I'll use it as an external drive for photos and video, or as a Time Machine back-up. I don't currently need an internal drive so that's why I'm using this SATA externally.
The reason I drop a star is because I initially intended to use it with my HP Envy notebook,
but I could not get the system to recognize the 860 EVO. I even downloaded the Samsung Magician software, and though it can see it, it tells me "this drive is not supported".
There may be a workaround if I were to contact tech support or install the drive directly, but it shouldn't be so hard.
With sizes 250GB through 4 TB, the Samsung 860 EVO is exciting for performance, form factor, and the price of admission.
I'd recommend purchasing it if you know you will be able to get it to work with your system.
